Should i mulch impatiens

Last year we got way too much rain shortly after they were planted and I lost a bunch of them from damping off. These were mature plants all ready flowering plants. One day they looked fine and the next they were laying on the ground dieing.

So yes you can overwater Impatiens. Damping off and root rot are not the same. My soil drains too fast to get root rot. I didn't know mature plants could get damping off. Impatiens Quickly Dying after Mulch App. Diane Bilke 11 years ago. Email Save Comment 5. Sort by: Oldest. Newest Oldest. Like Save. Diane Bilke Original Author. Thanks for the response. I've got a rancher in Toronto , Canada. I'm right there with you. Lot's of potential, a fortune to realize!! I'm 10 years into trying to improve this baby.

If it were my house, I would paint out the garage door to blend in visually with the brick colour looks like it might be taupe and then paint the front door a brighter attractive colour to draw attention to the entry way - could be blue or could look at shades and tones of orange or coral from light to very deep that work in your light. Here in Toronto Canada I would use charcoal grey because of our light.

The shutters and gable could match or be two tones deeper if your house is in full sun, or two lighter if it faces North. I would add some larger, modern lighting to the roof gable to brighten it up and add drama to the "arrival" experience I would also look at vintage and restored ranch houses for inspiration. In Florida, in the 40's and 50's lots of tropical colours looked fabulous. To understand why mulch can benefit impatiens, you must first understand the needs of these annual flowers.

Impatiens grow in all U. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones as annuals and will generally survive winters in USDA zones 9 through 11, depending on the species. In general, the flowers thrive in cool, moist soils and in partial shade with about two to four hours of exposure to filtered sunlight.

Some cultivars can tolerate more sunlight, so choose according to the conditions in your landscape. Many impatiens can also be cultivated in full shade but will bloom less profusely. Mulch keeps the soil cool and helps it retain moisture, which is very important if impatiens are to thrive. It also stifles weed growth, which can especially benefit the smaller varieties of impatiens. Mulch is also attractive and can provide a neat visual foil against the dark green leaves and bright blooms of the flowers.

Finally, organic mulch adds nutrients to the soil, which can benefit the flowers if the soil is poor or fertilizer was not used. It's best to mulch after you plant your impatiens rather than before, according to the University of Illinois Extension.

Watering Impatiens Water is very important to impatiens. If you have good soil with lots of organic material added each year and if your impatiens are well mulched, you will need to water them only when it has not rained for a week or two.

This is particularly true for impatiens growing in containers. You will know when impatiens need water. Their succulent stems and thin leaves wilt dramatically the minute they are deprived of sufficient moisture. They recover quickly, though, as soon as they are watered. Alternating extremes of wet and dry soil is stressful for impatiens, so try as much as possible to provide a fairly constant level of moisture throughout the growing season.
