Known as the month of the rose, May is a beautiful time to experience Italy. It's warm but not too hot and still early enough to avoid the crowds of summer visitors.
Visitors can enjoy wonderful open-air performances in cities such as Rome and Verona , while sun seekers can relax. The busy school break months of July and August see increased summer temperatures and high visitor numbers as the hot, dry days draw in the crowds.
Italy's best travel months are May, June, September, and October. They're also the busiest and most expensive time to visit with the north remaining just as busy throughout midsummer. Crowds aside, these months combine the convenience of peak season with pleasant weather. Florence and Rome are no longer as quiet as they once were. Just be aware that many fashionable restaurants and nightspots are closed for the whole month.
From late October to Easter, many attractions operate on shorter winter hours, and some hotels are closed for renovation or redecoration, although inconvenience is much less likely if you are visiting a city. Many family-run restaurants take a week or two off sometime between November and February; spa and beach destinations become padlocked ghost towns. The higher temperatures measured in Italy in degrees Celsius usually begin everywhere in May, often lasting until sometime in October.
